Binaural beats are a high tech solution to enter into a quick state deep relaxation so you can fall asleep fast.
The brainwave frequencies that determine our levels of alertness are:
- Beta (13 – 40 Hz) – Active, alert and focused
- Alpha (8 -12 Hz) – Relaxed, calm and creative
- Theta (4 – 8 Hz) – drowsy, light sleep and dreams
- Delta (less than 4 Hz) – Deep sleep
To fall asleep we need to go from our normal waking state, to a relaxed theta, and then finally all the way to delta. Binaural beats are a scientifically proven way to speed up this process, so you get to the delta state quicker and as a result fall asleep faster. For more about the science of binaural beats, have a read of the article Fall Asleep Fast With Binaural Beats.
Binaural beats audio sessions consist of two parts, background audio and binaural beats. The background audio is designed to provide a relaxing backdrop to monotonous hum of the binaural beats. The binaural beats can be played at a low volume and still be effective. Sometimes you can only just make them out over the background audio.
In this section I have reviewed three of the most popular binaural beats products:
Slow Wave Sleep – Best binaural beats to play through the night
Slow Wave Sleep is from Brain Sync, a company that has been producing binaural beats since 1991. They were launched by Kelly Howell, a prominent brainwave researcher with over 30 years of experience working with mind altering technologies. Brain Sync’s products have been clinically tested and are available in hospitals, spas and retreats all over the world.
Brain Sync have a range of sleep products, but their most popular by far is Slow Wave Sleep. It’s a 35 minute audio track consisting of high quality ocean waves with a very faint background hum of binaural beats. It contains a really nice mix of binuaral beats, nature sounds and white noise. These sounds work together to create a very relaxing track to drift you off to sleep. It’s ideal for putting it on repeat throughout the night.
Pros of Slow Wave Sleep
- The 35 minute long track makes it easy to drift off and fall asleep
- Good mix of relaxing sounds
- Works well as background music
Cons of Slow Wave Sleep
- Goes straight to the delta frequency rather than slowly working its way down (but this means it can be played on repeat)
If you’re in bed feeling relaxed and need something to push you over the edge and into sleep, these binaural beats will work fantastically well. They’re ideal for playing throughout the night.

Music To Promote Sleep – Best value binaural beats
The rather scientifically named Music To Promote Sleep is an hour long album featuring six tracks. Each track is around 10 minutes long and has specially designed to invoke the delta brainwave state that’s associated with deep sleep.
Music To Promote Sleep was designed by Dr Lee Bartel, a professor in music education from the University of Toronto who specialises in music therapy and how music affects the brain.
Each track can be bought separately so you can choose to buy just one or two tracks rather than the whole album. Previews are available of each of the tracks.
Pros of Music To Promote Sleep
- One of the cheapest binaural beats products market
- The album contains multiple tracks to choose from
- Scientifically designed by a doctor with vast experience
Cons of Music To Promote Sleep
- I found the music good for relaxing but a little too up-tempo to fall asleep to
The short tracks are great for listening to just before bed to help you relax. Personally I would have preferred the tempo to be a little slower, but they’re still definitely worth a listen.

Binaural Beats Sleep Package – Best binaural beats for falling asleep
The binaural beats sleep package is a pack of four binaural beats audio sessions. It’s produced by the Unexplainable store, a popular binaural beats online store. They’ve been in business since 2007, selling a vast range of binaural beats for sleep relaxation and meditation. They have some real gems if you can look past the excessive new age marketing.
Each session in the binaural beats sleep package works in a different way to help you sleep. The four sessions included in the package are:
Dive Quickly and Deeply – Takes you from the relaxed alpha frequency to the deep sleep delta frequency in just 10 minutes.
Short Nap – A guided ten minute power nap that brings you all the way down to delta and back to alpha for a well rested feeling of fresh alertness.
Counting Sheep – A nice soft recording that slowly brings you down to a low theta so that you’re relaxed and ready to fall asleep.
Deep Sleep – A 35 minute audio that slowly and gradually takes you all the way down to delta so that you drift off to sleep.
Each of these tracks are set to dreamy music alongside the binaural beats. You can preview each binaural beats audio session on their website. Each track is also available to buy separately if you just want to buy one or two.
Pros of the Binaural Beats Sleep Package
- Each binaural beats session is designed for a specific targeted outcome
- Starts at a high frequency and gradually works its way down so works well even if you’re feeling stressed or alert
Cons of the Binaural Beats Sleep Package
- Because the binaural beats start at a high frequency before working their way down it’s not suitable for listening on repeat
These are the best binaural beats if you want to go from wide wake to fast asleep in record time. It’s a shame the Unexplainable Store’s new age branding will put a lot of people off.
